Do I employ or outsource my Payroll?

Outsourcing has been around for a long time. Initially introduced in the 1980’s but we think it’s safe to say that it has really taken off during the last decade.

With more entrepreneurs preferring to set up on their own rather than making someone else money, there is a need for these services, and they are available for almost anything.

Whether you want a professional to do your marketing, accounting, admin, you will find an expert who is ready and willing to help. But when it comes to Payroll, is it something you can trust someone else to do?

Well, let’s face it, whether you employ someone to do it or outsource, it’s likely you are going to trust someone else to do it for you but what differentiates the two options?

Here’s some of our top reasons that we think outsourcing is a great idea.

Training

Employment

It takes time to train a new employee. Even if they are familiar or experienced in payroll, they need to get to know your systems, policies and procedures.

Vs

Outsourcing

We are experts at what we do. A short, simple conversation and we are good to go saving you hours of precious time.

Reliability

Employment

Although it’s likely that you will employ a reliable staff member, what would you do if they are taken ill? What do you do when they take holiday? Does your payroll stop? Do you other staff members not get paid? Do you have to take over?

Vs

Outsourcing

Of course, we get ill and now and again, we take time off. But, we have it covered. As a team, we cover each other so there is always someone on hand to take over when we are not available. You won’t even miss us!

Focus

Employment

When you have a staff member in house, it’s often tempting to ask them to help out with other tasks. It’s natural. They are there and relatively available so why wouldn’t they want to help you out? But it’s a distraction. Payroll needs attention and if they don’t give it 100%, costly mistakes could be made.

Vs

Outsourcing

You will have a dedicated member of the team that works on your account. Yes, it’s likely that they will have other clients but the time they dedicate to you is yours and yours alone. You wouldn’t think about picking up the phone to ask them to help with a separate task, they are completely focussed on this one area of your business.

Cost

Employment

This is a big one. When you decide to hire a member of staff, there needs to be a budget in place to enable you to afford them. The cost of a salary is likely to be far more expensive to your business than outsourcing. And that’s just their salary. You will also need to consider pension contributions, tax and NI, sick pay, holiday pay and any other deductions.

Vs

Outsourcing

There are no added costs. We are not employed by you. We agree a fixed fee and that’s all you pay. You don’t need to worry about any of the extras because you are paying for a service not a staff cost.

Flexibility

Employment

There is limited flexibility with an employee. They have hours that they are contracted to do and if you don’t need every one of those hours, you are paying for limited productivity.

Vs

Outsourcing

There is much more flexibility to outsourcing. We decide the amount of time needed from the outset, it can usually be changed at any point and that’s all you pay for.

And that’s just a few of the reasons we think you should outsource your Payroll. It’s an exciting time when you decide to start recruiting but trying to manage payroll yourself can be a nightmare if it’s not something you are familiar with.

Get the experts in. If they are the right fit for your company then they will simply feel like an extension of your own team. They are there to make life easy and cost-effective for you and ultimately, make a great business decision.

Always here for advice if you need it. Just ASBK!
